TOKYO METRO MARUNOUCHI LINE NAKANO-SHIMBASHI STATION

The Rising Wedge Line Turns the Subway Station into a Landmark That Bridges People and the City

This project renovates the aging Nakano-Shimbashi Station to make it barrier-free. Yayoi-cho, where the station is located, has a unique character. The Kanda River, which borders the site, separates areas with different generations of residents and building scales. Despite these differences, the area around the station is a place where diverse people gather and coexist, forming a unique town. We planned the station as a city node, using this individuality as a basis. The station entrances are positioned towards the intersection, taking advantage of the corner lot to create a sense of 'presence' in the streetscape and 'openness' to the city. The design aims to symbolize the station as a node that fosters connections between people and other towns, with a wedge line that rises from underground to above ground. The concourse features a 'gathering plaza' for the community outside the ticket gates and a 'gathering space' with furniture for users inside. Warm natural materials are used in the gathering spaces, while cool, urban materials are used in the passage to create a contrasting composition.
