It is one of the four newly established stations along with the extension of the Hanzomon Line of the Teito Rapid Transit Authority (currently Tokyo Metro) from Suidobashi to Oshiage, and it is a transfer station with the Toei Shinjuku Line. The four stations have the common theme of "Inheriting Edo Shitamachi Culture for the Future" in accordance with the regions where they are located. The theme of Sumiyoshi Station is "Edo Artisan Skills", and the station color is "Beni-hi" (deep red). Since the platforms are divided into two levels, the identification is achieved by contrasting the designs, colors, and art walls of each level. The inner walls of the railway tracks are composed of "Asano-ha (hemp leaf) patterns", "Edo Kiriko (cut glass)", "Kagome (honeycomb) ", and "Edo craftsmanship". Since there are a total of four ticket gates including those of the Toei Line, lighting boxes with line colors are assembled in a lattice pattern with different Edo motifs above each of them to enhance the distinguishability. In addition, art walls and sculptures in line with the theme have also been installed in the large halls and corridor sections with large wall surfaces, aiming to create a station space that people can feel close to.
