Shomonji Temple Shuryou

A Monastic Space in Pursuit of Minimalism

This project involves the construction of a new shuryo—a dormitory for monks—within the grounds of a Soto Zen temple with over 500 years of history. In Zen monasteries, the shuryo serves as the living quarters for monks in training. Each monk is allocated a space known as "Tan", equivalent to one tatami mat (approximately 1.8 square meters), where they meditate, eat, and sleep. As the saying goes, “half a mat to sit, one mat to sleep.” Up to four monks share this space, engaging in their practice together. The building is composed of natural materials such as Japanese cypress and traditional plaster. Its design is intentionally minimal and stripped of excess, creating a serene and disciplined environment that reflects the essence of Zen training.
