CANDEO HOTELS HIROSHIMA HATCHOBORI

Reimagining the Historic Kyoguchi Gate as a New Threshold for Future Journeys

This project is a mixed-use development located in Hatchobori, an area that has long served as the heart of Hiroshima City. The complex integrates a hotel, bridal facilities, and commercial spaces. Historically, this site was home to the Kyoguchi Gate, once a symbolic departure point for journeys toward Kyoto. From the early planning stages, tenants had already been determined, prompting a careful strategy to incorporate multiple functions within a compact site of approximately 1,000 square meters. The hotel’s shared facilities—including the lobby, restaurant, and a sky spa with open-air baths—are located on the 13th and 14th floors. The chapel and banquet halls for the bridal program are situated on the 10th to 12th floors. These upper-level spaces were designed to maximize natural light and panoramic views, enhancing the facility’s overall appeal. At ground level, dining establishments activate the street frontage, ensuring easy access and contributing to a lively urban atmosphere. The architectural motif of the “gate,” used as a key design element, symbolizes the beginning of various journeys—past, present, and future—and serves as a unifying gesture across the diverse functions of the building.
